The name “Riyadh” is derived from the Arabic word meaning “a place of gardens and trees” ("rawdah"). In the past, the city was called “Al-Yamamah.” With many wadis (formerly waterway, now mostly dry valleys) in the vicinity, Riyadh is a fertile area in the heartland of the Arabian Peninsula. Riyadh is 853 kilometers by road from Jeddah on the Red Sea, and 386 kilometers from Dammam on the Arabian Gulf.
